Review: As someone who has been researching my family tree for 15 or so years, the recent glut of sites such as Ancestry offering searchable databases of all the main data sets has been invaluable. For anyone just starting out however, I would make sure you know at least the names and locations of your ancestors in 1901 before giving you cash to Ancestry (the credits expire within a couple of weeks and you lose any you haven't used so it's better to wait until you have a lot to search for before using Ancestry). The main data set which will be of interest to any ameteur genealogists are the births marriage and death indexes (althought there is only a partial index for all bmds, the rest are indexed for very three years although if you don't know when an event took place this can be time consuming). Also of interest are the census returns - these are available for 1841 - 1901 for England and Wales and 1841 for Scotland has just been added - be warned though, there are a few entries which have been mistranscribed so if you can't find your ancestor, try some variations of their name... All this said, the site is well laid out and easy to navigate - cetainly the best online genealogy resource available at the moment.

Review: I signed up for Ancestry.co.uk and can't believe that I have traced my family back to the late 17th Century! Great Value. I now have the start of my family tree and intend to delve deeper and deeper into it. Just a pity i didn't find any famous relations.
